Nyack Sturgeon Show Huge Spike In Hudson River Deaths

In the two years since the Tappan Zee bridge construction began in 2012 over 100 endangered Atlantic and short nose sturgeon have been found dead. By contrast only 13 were found between 2007 and 2011. Is this a direct result of bridge construction? No definitive answer has been reached. Unfortunately construction will be long since completed before the state will concur with or concede to scientific evidence. The state spokes person for the bridge, Brian Conybeare , stated “no sturgeon deaths have been definitively attributed to the project to date”. And so it will be until the end of the project, the state clearly winning this standoff.

The Atlantic sturgeon is among the oldest fish species in the world. It was in great abundance when the first settlers came to North America, but has since declined. It is considered threatened, endangered, and even locally extinct in many of its original habitats. The fish can reach 60 years of age, 15feet in length and weight up to 800 lbs. The sturgeon has made a remarkable recovery in the Hudson River. From virtually extinct 20 years ago to a strongly reproducing population now. Strict protection guidelines have accounted for this comeback. It would truly be a tragedy to see this magnificent fish back on the survival ropes. Image title
