Nyack Pilgrimage To Saratoga Race Track
Dated: August 15 2017
I make a yearly visit to the historic Saratoga race track each summer, a few hours from Nyack in beautiful upstate New York. It is a wonderful venue filled with pageantry during the brief racing season. Considered the oldest sporting venue in America, the race track opened in 1863. Originally the racing season was only 4 days. It has now expanded to 40 days ending on Labor Day. The track holds 50,000 people and is often full during some of the big name races like the Alabama & Travers Stakes. Equally as famous as the racing are the fancy hats women wear to the track. This is a tradition in keeping with the Victorian roots of the track. You really have to see it to believe it, but they are mind blowing at times.
Saratoga Race course has several nicknames including The House of Upsets and The Graveyard of Champions. I’ll include a few famous loses here.
Man o' War suffered his only defeat in twenty-one starts while racing at Saratoga Race Course, losing to Upset in the 1919 Sanford Stakes;
Gallant Fox, the 1930 Triple Crown winner, was beaten by the 100-1 long shot Jim Dandy in the 1930 Travers Stakes;
Secretariat, the 1973 Triple Crown winner, was defeated by Onion in the 1973 Whitney Handicap;
American Pharaoh, the 2015 Triple Crown winner and a 1-5 favorite, was upset in the 2015 Travers Stakes by Keen Ice for his second career loss.
Make the trip up before the season is over, you will be glad you did.
