Hurricane season in the Atlantic begins on June 1 and lasts through November. Named storms this year could be:

Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dorian, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry

Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, Wendy

The list of hurricane names is determined by the United Nations World Meteorological Organization. The NHC uses six lists in rotation and they are recycled every six years.

The original name lists featured only women's names. In 1979, men's names were introduced, alternating with the women's names. The storms are named alphabetically. The letters Q,U,X,Y,Z are not used.

Two names that won’t be on any more hurricane lists are Florence and Michael, which will be replaced with Francine and Milton on the 2024 list. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration typically retire hurricane names when a storm is particularly destructive or deadly. Hurricane Florence caused more than 40 deaths in September 2018 when it left heavy flooding across the Carolinas and Virginia. Hurricane Michael devastated parts of the Florida Panhandle in October 2018 and is blamed for at least 45 deaths and widespread damage.

Infamous storm names such as Sandy ( 2012)  and Katrina ( 2005) have previously been retired.Image title
