Nyack Enters The 2018 Hurricane Season
Dated: July 6 2018
Hurricane Beryl is officially the first hurricane of 2018. The memory of Super Storm Sandy is slowly fading throughout the various River Towns as yet another Hurricane season is upon us. Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project leads the way in tropical storm predictions. They are expecting a less active 2018 hurricane season. They predict only 1 major storm of category III or higher. Cool Atlantic water temperatures seem to be driving their thinking. We also know, as Sandy painfully proved on October 29th, that the season is longer than just the summer. The number of storms in any given year has no correlation to land damage. In 2010 there were 19 named storms with 12 reaching hurricane intensity, yet not a single one made landfall in the United States. In contrast, 1992 had only 6 named storms, but the one called Andrew blasted a path of death and destruction across Southern Florida. The bottom line is you can never be too prepared. Another major storm will hit the eastern seaboard; it’s just a matter of when. I hope it’s not for many years to come.
For the record a tropical cyclone is when sustained swirling winds reach 74 miles per hour or above. They are called Hurricanes in the Atlantic, Typhoons in the Pacific, and Cyclones in the Indian Ocean.
Let’s all hope for a safe end to the 2018 Hurricane season.
