New Films Focus On Ramapo Mountain Indians

Nyack's Rivertown Film has called our attention to a new movie, "Out of The Furnace" starring Woody Harrelson and Christian Bale. Harrelson's dark, "inbred" character is a member of an insular group of "mountain people"  in northern New Jersey, very obviously based on the Ramapough Lenape Nation, whose several thousand members live in Rockland County (Hillburn, NY), Stag Hill (Mahwah, NJ), and Ringwood, NJ areas. The blog "Thompson on Hollywood" makes note of the character's name, Harlan Degroat, and points out that the film makers may be on shaky ground, as the Degroat name is one of several that are actually prominent in the community.
"The Red Road," a miniseries to air soon on the Sundance Channel, also centers on the Ramapo tribe. Here's a description from The Futon Critic blog...."a hard-hitting drama that revolves around a sheriff struggling to keep his family together while simultaneously policing two clashing communities: the small town where he grew up and the neighboring Ramapo Mountains, home of the Ramapo Mountain Indians."
Several non-fiction books have been written on the tribe and about the confusion over the genealogy of these very interesting people. Look up "Ramapough Mountain Indians" on Wikipedia and you'll get a short, fascinating history lesson!
