Everyone’s been wondering what use will be made of the former Stop and Shop store in West/Central Nyack, but the hope for a Trader Joe’s have evidently been dashed. My source at the Hub shopping center told me that the innovative, California-based group looked into it, but didn’t want to commit to that much space. Too bad, and a blow to the small business owners already suffering from the loss of the anchor store there. Worst of all, Stop and Shop has reportedly refused to give up their lease until 2014. This is a commonly-used “big business” maneuver that will forestall the possibility of competition for their new store in Orangeburg. It’s worth it for them to pay the additional rent in order to get shoppers into the habit of travelling far afield to their other stores. A number of the older and lower-income shoppers who counted on that neighborhood supermarket don’t have cars, and had to pay taxi fare to shop there. If they want to stay with the chain, that fare gets a big hike in order to take them to Orangeburg! Let’s all go to the ShopRite in West Nyack, the Old World Market in Nyack, the A&P in Valley Cottage….or try out the new Fairway in Nanuet.....and show them we don’t like what they did to their “loyal locals” by slowing the redevelopment of the site! By the way, rumor has it that a couple of lesser-known chains are considering the site for a start-up location in Rockland.
