Marydell Property In Upper Nyack Hopefully Preserved
Dated: May 26 2015
The Sisters of our Lady of Christian Doctrine own the 38 acres of prime real estate known as Marydell, which includes a retreat center, two residences, a sprawling meadow and a glorious view of the Hudson River which all sits next Hook Mountain in Upper Nyack. They would like to see it preserved as open space. They are in talks with the Trust for Public Land and state and local officials to see how to best accomplish this.
Selling Marydell outright to the Trust for Public Land, which would then resell it to New York state, would be one way for the religious order to ensure the financial future of its remaining sisters. That is the plan that Senator Carlucci said he has been discussing. Under one scenario, the Trust would purchase the entire property, and then lease back the 6-acre parcel that's used for the retreat center and summer camps. Under another plan, the retreat center would be split off and the Trust would buy the remaining land, which would then sell it to the state.
From 1925 to 1988, the property served as a girls summer camp. Then the sisters decided they'd had it with he rigors of the overnight program. By 1990, it was reborn as the Marydell Faith and Life Center, which holds weekend retreats with beds for 16 in the cabins and room for up to 100 to gather in the 1929 prefabricated Sears barn known as the Kateri Lodge. Summer day camps still use the center in July and August.
Let’s hope for the success of these discussions so that future generations will be able to enjoy its beauty.
