  When a Marcel Proust character took a bite of a madeleine, the taste took him back to his childhood for the next three hundred pages.  For me, it's the smell of burning leaves.  Every once in a while, I'll get a whiff, but because of anti-pollution laws, that ever-present autumnal odor is long gone.  I know that it's really a good thing- we don't need anything else fouling up the air unnecessarily, but still...  The highway department does a great job sucking up the roadside leaf piles with their huge vacuum machine, but I doubt if today's kids will remember that as fondly as I remember a bit of smoke.
