Largest Floating Crane Ever Used In United States Coming To Nyack

They call it the Left Coast Lifter, and it's on its way to Nyack to help build the new Tappan Zee Bridge.  For the past few years, this ginormous beast of a crane has been in Oakland, California lifting massive pieces of steel onto to the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.  The platform was built in Portland, Ore., however, it was outfitted in China with one of the world's largest shear-leg cranes.

At 400 feet, the Lifter is longer than a football field.  The frame holding its Chinese crane is 130 feet tall and features a twin 328-foot boom. It can lift up to 1,725 metric tons or 3.8 million pounds, the equivalent of 656 fully loaded SUVs.  This mammoth crane was a big selling point for the builders of the Tappan Zee Bridge when they were bidding on the $4 billion contract.  It's being sold to the consortium of four companies -- including American Bridge and Tappan Zee Constructors -- that will build the new Tappan Zee.
It is traveling on a 6000 mile journey via the Panama Canal right to our Nyack shores.  There are estimates that we'll have close to 100 barges and 25 cranes in our local waters over the next few years.  I think this world famous red, white and blue monster machine will be the one to see.  It should be here by the end of the year.
