James Franco and Brad Pitt in Piermont

What does James Franco, Jonah Hill, Brad Pitt and Piermont have in common?  A new movie starring Franco and Hill called True Story was being fimed in Piermont this week.  Brad Pitt is one of the producers on the fim.

The movie is a drama centered around the relationship between journalist Michael Finkel and Christian Longo, an FBI Most Wanted List murderer who for years lived outside the U.S. under Finkel's name.

I found out about this movie as I was driving through the little village of Piermont. Normally, it's pretty quiet on a Monday morning, but this week I was flagged down by a fim crew member to stop and wait for a scene to be fimed.  As I sat in my car and watched a screetching Jeep Cherokee racing through the streets (part of the movie) I thought about Piermont, and how movies may have helped jump start its renaissance.

In 1983, Woody Allen filmed The Purple Rose of Cairo in Piermont.  The movie, starring Mia Farrow, Jeff Daniels, and Danny Aiello, was a depression era movie that some feel may have put the sleepy village of Piermont on the map.   Would Piermont have eventually been re-discovered?  Probably.  However, there is no denying that Woody Allen's movie probably helped.

I also remember photographing Val Kilmer and Mia Sorvino in Piermont on the set of the 1999 movie, At First Sight.

So while I was sitting in my car waiting for the scene to finish, I thought about the history of film making in Piermont and how waiting in my car for a few minutes wasn't such an inconvenience. Having that kind of minor disruption to our daily routines is just a part of how the new Piermont came to be, and what makes Piermont such a special, not so secret place.  Plus it was cool watching the red Jeep skidding across Piermont Avenue.

The movie is coming out in 2014.
