Humming Birds Have Personality In Valley Cottage

I have been feeding humming birds for years in my Valley Cottage back yard. They are tiny wonders of nature that never cease to amaze me. They have the ability to hover in mid-air or fly forward, backward and even upside down. The male is spectacularly colored with a ruby red throat patch and iridescent green feathers on his back.  Every year the hummingbirds that come to our feeder seem to have different personalities. Some are very shy, hardly ever being seen. Some are bold and will feed with a table full of people sitting a few feet away at our outdoor table. One used to loudly bang his beak on the feeder each time he drank the nectar. A few have perched to drink over the years but most like to hover as they feed. Come fall they make that long migration down to South America.

Hummingbird food is easy and inexpensive to make. Mix 4 parts water to 1 part white sugar, boil until sugar is dissolved and store in fridge. The nectar should be replaced every few days in really hot weather and once a week or so rest of the season. I hang my feeder right by the window so I can enjoy my little friends all the time. Put a feeder out at your house and watch nature at her finest.Image title
