How Good For Rockland Residents Is Hudson Water

I continue to write Blogs about the latest on United Water’s proposed desalination plant in Haverstraw to keep interested parties aware.  Well, this latest is enough to turn your stomach.
As many of us know, when sewage levels in Westchester County become too high, sometimes, because of flooding due to stormy weather, the rivertowns on that side of the river deliberately dump waste directly into the Hudson River.  More often, if the sewage systems are compromised, they will break causing additional contamination.  (And let’s not forget about what was already picked up from Indian Point leaking waste into the river.)   All this makes for a “not so clean” Hudson River for anyone who wants to enjoy water sports from the shores of Sneden’s Landing, Piermont, Grandview, or Nyack.
Now, the latest development has to do with studies that have found high concentrations of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the water.  These bacteria show a resistance to antibiotics that help fight ear infections, pneumonia, and salmonella.  These studies also show a link between the bacteria and the high levels of sewage waste in the river.   Meanwhile, local conservative political officials are asking for budget cuts of up to 30% to the EPA which is proposing major water-related infrastructure improvements.  Watch & Read more here. http://rivertowns.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/officials-bacteria-in-the-hudson-could-pose-health-risks?a_dgi=aolshare_facebook
Once again, it’s important who we elect on a local level because it’s these politicians who are looking out for our best interests.  And it certainly looks like those budget cuts should not be made.  Instead, funds should immediately be directed to help improve the water-related infrastructure system so that more waste does not drain into the water.  Perhaps Suez and United Water will also allocate money to be used to improve the cleanliness of the Hudson River Water…..especially because they will be forcing us to drink it before long if something isn’t done to stop the building of the desalination plant in Rockland County.
