The Arctic blast Nyack is experiencing is a real danger to both people and their pets so I thought a repeat of last year’s warning might be in order. Exposure to extreme cold combined with windy conditions can cause permanent damage or even death. Frostbite can occur in one minute if the temperature should fall to -20 with a 20 MPH wind. Frostbite can have lifelong effects, causing long-term chronic pain and sensitivity to cold or numbness. In extreme cases, amputation may be necessary. This has happened to many mountain climbers. Fingers, toes, and ears are especially susceptible. Even though your dog or cat wears a fur coat, they are also at risk. Alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine all leave your skin much more prone to thermal damage. It goes without saying that getting wet will accelerate the effects of cold and hypothermia. If any part of your body feels numb, get inside immediately. Pay special attention to your toes, fingers and ears. If you suspect you have frostbite, seek medical attention immediately. Frostbite areas may look white, gray or waxy and feel numb, hard or frozen.
Hypothermia is when the body core temperature drops below 95 degrees F. The symptoms of hypothermia can sneak up on you. Starting with shivering, racing heart beat, slurred speech, and confusion; it can end in coma or death from complete organ shutdown.
Everybody please be careful and aware this winter.
