Driving In Nyack With Slippery Roads

I worked for a major corporation with an objective of keeping their employees safe.  Since I was driving a company car in the wintry states, that company sent me to somewhere in the middle of Minnesota in January (can you spell C-O-L-D???) to attend "skid school."  This is a school where highway patrol officers are taught how to drive and successfully maneuver under many kinds of road conditions.  Basically, we spent 3 days in classes and driving a course on a large sheet of ice.

So, with the recent snow storm and a large storm impending this weekend, I would like to share the key learnings I came away from that invaluable training with.
1. Each of us has a speed on ice/slippery roads, where we have control of the car. 1 mph more and you no longer have control of the car - my personal "break point" is between 32 and 33 mph.  And, even though I may have control of my car at that speed, others around me may not, so it pays to slow down, keep an eye out on others around you, and arrive safely without an insurance claim.
2. When your car begins to slip and slide, put it in neutral so that the engine stops trying to drive the wheels.  It is a lot easier to regain control if you don't have the additional forces on the wheels.
3. Always treat your brakes as if there is a raw egg on the pedal. Step lightly with constant pressure so you don't break the egg.
It doesn't seem much for 3 days driving on an ice slick, but those are the key messages.
Stay safe, stay warm, and stay home if you can!
