Cul De Sac Living Not Really Trending

Are Cul-de-sacs losing their charm?   More and more lately I have noticed that young families are looking for homes closer to the center of town.  In the past, my clients dream home was on a cul-de-sac in a quiet area away from the town or city hub. Recently the pendulum has swung… “find me a home where I can walk to the train”, “I want to be able to walk to local restaurants” or “my parents will be moving in and it would be great if they could walk to the supermarket”, these are a few of the requests I have been hearing from my “gen X” clients. For the most part they are coming from downtown apartments in NYC, Hoboken or Jersey City; they have become accustom to being in the center of all the action. For many towns in our area, like Nyack, New City and Tappan, this trend is proving to be a good thing. These young families are reviving downtown areas with their purchases by renovating older homes and adding children to neighborhoods that until recently were mostly populated by senior citizens. I think it’s a great thing, more businesses are popping up and families are becoming less reliant on their cars in daily life. Who knows, maybe we will actually see children playing outside again or walking to school on their own.
