Clues About Nyack Mystery Supermarket

“Coming Soon Supermarket” over the former Stop & Shop in West Nyack intrigued me. Stories from the Journal News and News 12 noted that the new tenant hasn’t chosen a name yet! “Owner Rudy Nunez is still conducting market analysis to determine the store’s name, products and pricing," according to the Journal News.  News 12 was told that the store "will feel like a mix of Trader Joe's and Whole Foods."

I tried to get some info from an owner of one of the existing stores. “They are very mysterious,” she said. That led me to charge into the vacant store when one of the doors was open. Renovation work was zipping along, but there were no signs.I corralled one of the workers and quizzed him, finally getting a vague answer about the coming tenants. “Maybe Market Fresh,” he said brightly, confusing me further.

There are only a few “Market Fresh” stores in the country and they do appear to be individually owned. Consumer ratings were mixed for the one in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Nunez owns the Associated and Food Choice supermarkets in the Bronx and Food Compare in Queens. Associated allows independently owned and operated stores to take advantage of merchandising and advertising economies normally available to larger supermarket chains.  Nunez plans to open by mid-May, so watch for an actual store name in the near future!
