CRUCIAL WARD VOTE In Chestnut Ridge Ramapo Tuesday

If you are a resident of Ramapo, including residents of Chestnut Ridge, Suffern, Airmont, Montebello, Spring Valley, Monsey, and Pomona to name a few, you definitely need to get out and vote on Tuesday, September 30th in favor of a WARD System as a means of electing town council members.   If you want fair representation, this is a no brainer!
Let me explain.  You may have noticed signs posted everywhere in Ramapo stating  6 Ramapo Wards / 6 Independent Voices….Vote YES.   You may have asked yourself what this is all about.
Well, here it is.  Residents of Ramapo currently have a LARGE System which means that a Supervisor, who is elected by the citizens, can appoint board members, and vote for and approve issues for the town at large.  However, this also means Ramapo is a First Class Town and can, therefore, by petition, request that its residents vote to establish a Ward System in which separate wards are established, each having its own elected representative.  www.dos.ny.gov/cnsl/lg01.htm

“Why would residents want a Ward System:

1.       It will elect town council members who answer directly to the voters in their own ward district. 2.       It will be more difficult for the town Supervisor to create a rubber stamp town board that will allow him to override planning recommendations of the county planning board. By changing to the Ward System, each council member will have a mandate to represent the one ward (district) of the town that elected them, rather than the entire town at large.  Each district gets its own dedicated voice in town government.  It helps to prevent the election of a rubber stamp board that answers to only one area or well financed individuals with special interests. “  www.vote6wards.org
It appears that many Ramapo residents have worked for over ten years to get this referendum to be brought to a vote by the people.  Please encourage any Ramapo resident you know to get out and vote YES Tuesday, September 30th.  Our Town depends on it!
