Black Bears In Nyack

Once again, many pictures of black bears, coyotes, fox, eagles, and wild turkeys roaming Rockland neighborhoods are being posted all over social media.  This is the County I grew up in. If I told my teachers and fellow students I spotted a black bear on the way to school in the 1960’s, eyes would have rolled and ridicule followed.  The population of Rockland wildlife has changed dramatically in the past 40 years, mostly for the positive.

In 1979 there were 259,000 people living in Rockland, today that number has increased to 326,000. It would seem that this increase would have been to the detriment of wildlife populations. The opposite effect has been seen throughout Rockland with many species flourishing to the point of overpopulation.

Canada geese have become a real problem, fouling waterways, parks and golf courses. White tailed deer destroy landscape, carry Lyme disease, and are a significant driving hazard on the road. The number of Wild turkeys has exploded and results in some aggressive encounters. Coyotes and black bears continue to expand their territory. Both are dangerous animals with several coyote attacks having occurred over the last years in Westchester County.

Many people think this “sudden” influx of wildlife sightings is because we have squeezed them out of their environment. Nothing could be further from the truth. What has happened is suburban sprawl has created the perfect habitat of woods for cover and open space for food. Build it and they shall come!!Image title
