Attracting Hummingbirds In Valley Cottage

Watching hummingbirds up close never ceases to amaze me. They have the ability to hover in mid-air or fly forward, backward and even upside down. I love the buzz I hear sitting on my deck in Clarkstown as one comes to the feeder.  Their name comes from the humming sound made by their tiny wings which beat anywhere from 50-200 times per SECOND! I have had the greatest success attracting them to hanging fuchsia plants, but bee balm, trumpet vines, and butterfly bushes also work well.   They are especially fond of red flowers.
I keep my liquid hummingbird feeder filled with a mixture of 4 parts water to 1 part white sugar. You just bring the mixture to a boil until sugar is dissolved and store in fridge. The nectar should be replaced every few days in really hot weather and once a week or so rest of the season.  You will read about red food dye being bad for them on line, but I never been able to find any research to substantiate that claim. I put a drop in and just think the feeder looks so much better red than clear. Put a feeder out for yourself and enjoy one of the wonders of nature native to Rockland County, New York.
