A Deer Rises From The Ashes In Blauvelt

The brush fire that burned hundreds of acres on Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg is finally under control. With rain in the forecast, it seems all danger has passed without any loss of life or property. I couldn’t restrain myself and went for a hike through the charred forest on this beautiful Saturday afternoon. In hindsight, this was a foolish move as smoke continued to rise from smoldering wood all over the ground. I have few observations to pass along. The trees seem to be in fine shape with no apparent burning to the canopy at all, though the under story looks like a post apocalyptic science fiction movie. What impressed me most was the wildlife seems to roll with destruction. I saw hawks, squirrels, birds, and even a deer bedded in a surviving bush, seemingly none the worse for wear. It looks like a happy ending to a potentially tragic tale.
