Sullivan County Casinos

Four casinos closed or closing this year alone in Atlantic City. This is a great example of an industry cannibalizing itself. There is only so much money to be lost. There are only so many people willing to lose it. Those who go only for the shows, the restaurants and the beach are few and far between...Maybe the northern NY suburbs can support one (only one), but I am skeptical. One thing for sure: if a Sullivan County location is the recipient of a license I seriously doubt the actual communities will benefit from commerce. After all, one block off the boardwalk in AC is hardly a shining light. The hookers, the crime and the needles still scatter the landscape like yellow-jackets on a picnic ham -- enough to make one pause and wonder "What happened to all the revenue which was supposed to help the pre-casino blight"? I think the answer is obvious.

People talk about how it will help the local commerce. I seriously doubt any casino goer will have any reason to leave the casino grounds to get a steak or buy a bauble......Interestingly though, I do think that the time for a great leisure resort (or maybe a few) in the catskills has arrived, sans casinos. Sullivan County is so close to NYC and retro style resorts are popping up everywhere. With the right business model mini resorts should do well. Here is a link to a retro one in Montauk. Ok, Montauk is an oceanfront community, however the mountains have tons of things to do and the ease of getting there is indisputable .
