More POTHOLES Than Usual In Rockland This Winter

Is it me or does it seems like there are many more potholes in the local roads and highways in Rockland County than usual this winter?  It appears that everywhere you go,  from Suffern to Nyack and Nanuet, from Stony Point to Palisades and Blauvelt, you have to be extra vigilant about not driving into potholes.  Otherwise, you run the risk of breaking a tire rim and causing an accident!  The state has already started to make repairs on the NYS Thruway to curb accidents.  Locally, we are not so lucky.  We are still in the middle of winter with a few months of freezing temperatures, snow, and of course, salted highways and byways.
If you research how these unpleasant obstacles are formed, you will see that when the road’s surface has a crack in it, water melts, mixes with salt, and seeps through.  When temperatures decrease to below 32 degrees, these surfaces, in turn, freeze which causes them to expand.  When temperatures increase, frozen roads contract, creating loose asphalt.  Heavy cars drive on loose asphalt and ….viola, potholes!   I suggest that the strange fluctuation in temperatures this winter has created a prime opportunity for more potholes!  I’ve been thinking a lot about this hypothesis lately, having noticed an increasingly large number of the craters.  And to my surprise, after surfing the internet today, I found several articles in various newspapers throughout the country, suggesting this very idea.  Polar vortex low temperatures followed by unseasonably warm, spring-like temperatures set the stage for more POTHOLES!  The conditions are just right!  Drive safely!
