Just Say NO To Single Use Carryout Plastic Bags

Next time you head out to the store, think about how you are going to get your products home. Stock your car with reusable grocery bags and most importantly, remember to bring the bags into the store. Single-use plastic bags should not be placed in general pick-up recyclables, clean bags should be returned to the store and placed in recycle bins. When these bags find their way to co-mingled recycling centers they clog and gum-up the machinery causing workers to use manual labor to unjam the machinery. Once separated, unfortunately, they end up in land fill, since there is no market to resell these dirty bags. NY State spends up to $300 million per year to send this trash to out of state landfills.  When littered in our streets and parks, these bags end up caught in trees in Harriman State Park Park, clogging sewers throughout New City and floating in the river in Nyack. So let's try to use less and please, keep those bags out of our co-mingled recyclables! How many plastic bags do you think you use in a day? Statistics state, we use 5.9 billion bags per year, which translates to 4-6 bags per person per day! New York State is considering legislation to ban or attach a user fee to each bag. What is your opinion, should we ban single use plastic bags or should we charge 5 cents per bag?
