Halloween, based on the Gaelic festival “Samhain” (sah-win) dates back about 2000 years and means “summer’s end” in Gaelic.  By the late 1800’s playing pranks on Halloween was a well-established tradition in the US and Canada. Tipping over outhouses, throwing eggs at homes and unlatching farmer’s gates were some of the most popular pranks. Vandalism and rowdy block parties nearly put an end to Halloween by the 1920’s and 1930’s. In an attempted to stem the violence, concerned parents and town leaders encouraged kids to dress up in costumes in exchange for sweets.

Consumers spend $75.08 per person of which $22.37 is spent on candy. After buying and eating far too much candy, I know what I’m going to do with the rest of the money. I’m going to spend it on one of my favorite Halloween tradition, Pumpkin Ale, and it’s brewed right here in Pearl River. It’s Headless Horseman Pumpkin Ale brewed at Defiant Brewery Co. located directly across from the train station at 6 East Dexter Plaza, Pearl River, NY. Stop by, have a sample and pick up a growler (jug) while supplies last and bring it to the party.
