Nyacks Favorite Peregrine Falcons Spend Second Year In New Nest
A perennial favorite, Nyack’s nesting pair of falcons are looking to raise a second batch of chicks on top of the Tappan Zee Bridge. The new nesting box is located on the southern face of the east bound span closest to Westchester. The nest is 400 feet above the Hudson approximately 150 feet higher than the old one. A web cam has been placed at the new nest site, click here for the link. Once almost extinct due to DDT pesticide use, peregrine falcons have made a remarkable comeback and can be seen nesting on skyscrapers and bridges throughout the New York area. The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on earth and can reach speeds of 200 mph in a hunting dive. Their prey is exclusively birds with pigeons being a local favorite. They swoop from great heights hitting the wing of their intended meal to disable the bird yet not injure themselves. The larger female will lay 3-4 eggs in March and the chicks will hatch approximately 30 days later.
Let’s hope another generation is in the works.
