Nyack Residents Watch ROSA and Rockland Water Coalition
ROSA stands for Ramapo Organized for Sustainability and a Safe Aquifer. This group is amazing and needs our support. I just read the article in the Journal News about the planning board delaying their decision for the development of the Patrick Farm, 208 acres off routes 202 and 306 outside the village of Pomona. In case you didn’t know, a developer is trying to get permission to build a project that consists of 410 high-density multifamily units and 87 single-family houses at that location. Last night, the Town of Ramapo planning board delayed approval of the project stating that they are concerned about a number of issues, such as the large number of units, the depletion of the natural resources for Rockland and Bergen counties, possible fair housing issues, and possible questionable information and behavior which a state justice uncovered last year. Thanks to many local residents and ROSA , the people were heard and the Planning Board is raising questions. Go to http://rosa4rockland.org/ to keep informed.
Rockland Water Coalition was formed out of concern for Suez / United Water’s proposed desalination plant in Haverstraw which will put innumerable demands on our environment, our budget, our health, and ….well, putting it plainly….we just don’t need it! The latest development on this very important issue is that the review of the project has been delayed for further research. When Hurricane Sandy hit, it destroyed many houses in Haverstraw Bay, the site where the proposed desalination plant is to be located. There is agreement among experts, including many in Albany, that it would have been destroyed as well, had it already been built. Not only that, with recent climate change questions arising which include what the impacts will be on the Hudson River Valley, the review of the project and approval have been put on hold. Here, again, the voices of concerned citizens and the actions of several very qualified activists have been heard by those in authority, including Gov. Cuomo. Go to Rockland Water Coalition to keep informed.
Whether you are a resident of Nyack, Pomona or Haverstraw, Rockland, or even Bergen County, which is greatly influenced by both of these issues, it is essential to be informed. Something like it could creep up in your village as well…..It’s good to know our voices can be heard, if we shout loud enough with positive actions and reform.
