Sandy Woodpiles-Refuse in Chestnut Ridge and Piermont
I was driving north the other day on Rt. 306, otherwise known as Saddle River Road, in Chestnut Ridge, and almost came to a screeching halt when I looked over toward the Town of Ramapo pool area. There, neatly organized in carefully arranged piles, was a collection of the aftermath of Horrific, Hurricane Sandy. First, you see a very long row of massive tree trunks piled much like Lincoln Logs in an area of approximately 100 yards long. To the right, an enormous mound of wood chips is deposited….mulch anyone? Lastly, to the rear of the parking lot, by the woods, is a gigantic heap of tree tops, brush, and branches. Now imagine breathing in the wonderful smell of pine….
Today, the front page of the Rockland Journal News features an article on clearing the mounds of wreckage, mainly in Piermont. It’s unbelievable and sad to see all the destruction and waste. A surprising fact mentioned in the article is a lot of what is being deposited besides brush, carpet, and furniture, is food! I’m a bit confused by that. I guess a lot of people had a lot of frozen food that spoiled. Why else would you throw away food? Maybe that has something to do with being “over consumers”…….Just something to think about.
