Car Break Ins In Nanuet

Clarkstown Police Department has reported an increased number of automobile burglaries recently in the Nanuet area - they weren't specific other than Nanuet. I had my car stolen once and it is not a fun experience. Some things I learned from it are:
  • Park in a well-lighted area (even though my car was parked under a light in the parking lot)
  • Don't leave valuables visible in the car - best is to leave valuables at home. If you can't do that, put them in the trunk before you arrive at your destination (burglars can watch you transfer your prized possessions to the trunk and then they will target your car.)
  • Close all windows and doors and lock your car!
  • Mark your valuables
  • Use anti-theft devices
  • Never leave your registration papers in the car
My own personal experience was a pain - dealing with personnel at the mall who thought I had just forgotten where I parked my car, filing police reports (the police were impressed that I carried my registration papers in my purse - I have NEVER left them in my car), filing insurance claims (a 4-year old car stereo that was not cheap to acquire was worth about $100 at the time it was stolen), replacing my briefcase and all the work and papers that were in it, replacing all the gifts that were in my car, and finally retrieving my car and having to pay towing and storage fees for it. When I went out to start the car in the lot to where it had been towed, the ignition was completely gone. I had to go back inside and ask how, exactly, I was supposed to get it started, only to be told that all I needed was a screwdriver to put in the space where the ignition had been located and turn it like I would the key.  Worked like a charm, but unfortunately the thieves know that.

Anyway, just be careful and make your car less attractive and less likely to be broken into and/or stolen.
