Brooklyn Bread And Sweets Opens In Nyack
You can say that Nyack definitely has its fair share of interesting shops, great restaurants, cool jazz clubs, and hip cafes, however one thing that has been missing in the village was a real gourmet fresh bread bakery. Sure we have our much loved Didier Dumas for that French pastrie experience and the local favorite Runcible Spoon for those yummy scones, cakes and treats, but where does one go for that freshly baked Ciabatta roll, or that rustic Italian style loaf? Well ....we now have The Brooklyn Bread and Sweets Bakery.
Located in a cozy space at 79 South Broadway in Nyack , this all natural and Kosher friendly bakery is the work of third generation baker Frank (Francis) Giusto and business partner Joann de Araujo.
Frank’s grandfather, also named Frank, started the Brooklyn Bread bakery back in the 1940’s in Bensonhurst Brooklyn. Frank senior, originally a stone mason who helped build West Point with his own hands, eventually traded in his stone building skills for bread making. He continued running and growing the family business with his son Frank Jr. and eventually brought his grandson, Frank (Francis) into the family business. In 2012, 3rd generation Frank moved the bakery to a new, much larger facility in Garfield, NJ. From their factory they pump out and distribute (wholesale) hundreds of pounds of bread daily to some big names like the Waldorf Astoria, Columbia University, The River Palms, and many major hospitals. In addition, you can find their bread in several local establishments including 8 North Broadway, 65 on Main, and The Time Hotel.
Frank and Joanne realized that Nyack needed a bread bakery storefront and chose this new south broadway location to be their spot. Currently the breads and pastries are made in their Garfield facility, but only until their new bakery ovens are installed. Very soon they will be baking daily on site. Joanne’s sales background coupled with Frank’s family history of bread baking make the perfect partnership to bring Nyack the freshest and most delicious artisan breads and pastries.
And if fresh bread and pastries weren't enough for you…..Brooklyn Bread is also an Italian gourmet shop. Partnering up with close friend and renowned chef Marcello Russodivito of Marcello’s Ristorante of Suffern, they stock his imported organic small batch pastas from Italy. As well as exotic olive oils, sauces and jams. In addition you can grab some hot Lavazza coffee and espresso. Soon they will be serving fresh mozzarella, along with breads stuffed with sausage and peppers, brocolli, pepperoni, eggplant and chicken parmesan. And for those of you with a sweet tooth....there's plenty to choose from including fresh Napoleons, Tiramisu, butter, almond and pignoli cookies, as well as all kinds of delicious cakes.
So as our wonderful village continues to grow and attract more and more creative retailers and food establishments, you can now add this fantastic new bakery to the list.
Nyack may not be as hip as Brooklyn (yet), but at least we can now say that we have the original Brooklyn Bread bakery.
