Baumgarts Opens in Nyack

I fell in love with Baumgart's the very first time I had dinner there. It was in 1997 and even though Englewood is only 13 or 14 miles from Nyack it seemed like a much greater distance. The original Baumgart's opened in 1944,made their own ice-cream and had a steady and very local clientele. Now,the children of the children who went there as tennagers after school to "hang out" are bringing their children to Baumgart's for special occasions-or just to make any occasion special! There was and is a wide variety of Asian, for some reason Italian, and very typical American food offered on the menu.It seemed to be an interesting, indeed unusual mix of cuisines served in an upscale diner-like atmosphere. All dishes were and are made totally fresh to order and I always enjoyed a delicious meal there.

Well, after after a long wait(more than 2 years)Baumgart's has finally come to Nyack-officially opening their doors to customers on September 7,2011.I had the pleasure of having lunch there on Sunday with a friend and, while I am not quite sure yet about how much I like or don't like the architectural details and design elements(lots of windows and good sunlight,semi-Asian rectilinear divisions of space which differs greatly from the ambiance of the Englwood Baumgart's) the food was spot on!The Shanghai Wontons were delicious, just as my taste buds had hoped they would be, and the String beans with Shrimp was perfect. The Steamed Fish Bun although it sounded very Chinatownesque was not what I expected. The Dusty Road is by far my all time favorite dessert.I like it so much that I don't feel the need to branch out and try something different. The wait staff were impeccably polite and attentive without hovering and the bill for all of this wonderful food was aboutn $20.00 dollars. We were so full that we practically rolled ourselves out the door,up the hill and back to the office in less then an hour! Now that I can eat at Baumgart's in Nyack any time I feel like,I'll stop in to enjoy the Dusty Road just for the fun of it!My Zagat rating system gives it a 4 stars

I know I went today --- was most excellent.....had a Chef specialty dish -- chicken, shrimp, calamari and eggplant! Kids had noodles. Loved the mint chocolate chip ice cream and chocolate sauce. And the service and owners were so gracious.
