AUTUMN GARDEN PLANTING YIELDS BRILLIANT COLORS NEXT SPRING IN NYACK

As the days grow shorter, it’s time for fall planting. This is a great time to reseed or plant a new lawn as grass grows best on cool nights with warm days. It is also the time to get your tulip, iris, and daffodil bulbs in the soil. There are thousands of bulbs available that will produce a rainbow of color all through the spring. With a little research you can have a garden that sprouts new colors every week from late march until July. I had abandoned many of my tulips here in Valley Cottage because they just became deer candy, now, with my motion activated sprinkler; deer are no longer a threat.

Bulbs are easy to plant. Dig a bed twice as deep as the bulb. Loosen the soil. Make sure bulbs are firm and plump. Discard any soft ones, as they have probably gone bad. Place bulbs pointed side up in a random or geometric pattern as you desire. Gently cover with dirt taking care not move the bulbs. Do not water unless extremely dry as this may promote rot. Some of my beds are mixed and some are all one color, both looks can be stunning. Get out and plant some this weekend, the variety available at any gardening center here in Rockland county will astound you, as will the beautiful blooms come spring.Image title
