AUTUM IS A FAVORITE SEASON IN NYACK

Autumn is a glorious time of year I look forward to more than any other seasonal change. Crisp days and cool nights make for great outdoor fun and sleeping. Fall starts following the autumnal equinox, 9/23/15, when daylight and night time are equal. The days are growing shorter from that point until Winter is officially ushered in. Originally know as Harvest, Fall has been the unofficial name since the 1800’s. Probably; with the population’s move away from farming; it had to do with falling leaves.

A few terms we associate with this time of year are often misused. Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the equinox, this year’s occurring on September 27th. The following full moon is known as the hunters moon, occurring October 27th. Indian Summer is another term often used to denote any Fall warm spell. It really requires a hard frost before the warm spell. The Farmer’s Almanac goes on to also state that it must occur between November 11th-20th. Who Knew?

Whatever your love, it is a magical season of magnificent leaf colors, Jack-o-lanterns, hot cocoa, and Thanksgiving. I hope everybody enjoys this gift from nature. I know we will here in Valley Cottage.Image title
